Biodiversity Prospecting
Benefits of Bioprospecting

The use of the national biodiversity presents opportunities and challenges for promoting and organizing investments in infrastructure and human resources that add value and contribute to its conservation.

Quantifying the benefits of bioprospecting is difficult, given the inherent complexity of assigning a value to an increase in knowledge about our own biodiversity, and to the technology transfer and training that occurs. From a strictly economic standpoint, since INBio began this activity in 1991 direct financial contributions made to other INBio programs, Conservation Areas, MINAE, and state universities exceed 2.7 million dollars.

At the same time, through the search for sustainable uses for our biodiversity we are promoting the development of products that could be beneficial for human, animal, and plant health.

Bioprospecting is emerging as The industry of the XXI century, and Costa Rica has a unique opportunity to lead the way.
