ANTHRIBIDAE

Author: John F. Lawrence, 2001.

Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Curculionoidea.

Description

Antenae with 11 segments, filiform, or with a 3 segments club. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa globular to projecting bellow prosternum with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally closed and internally closed. Mesocoxae separated by 0.4 to 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally closed. Tarsal formula 5-5-5 but tarsomere 4 reduced and concealed at base of lobe on 3 (pseudotetramerous). Number of ventrites 5 with 4 connate. Body length 1.5-20 mm. Usually oblong to elongate and pubescent, very rarely ovate or glabrous. Antennae well-developed, sometimes longer than body, straight, not geniculate. Rostrum moderately long and flattened, often shortened; labrum exposed and free, palps well-developed and movable. Prothorax usually with incomplete lateral margin continued dorsally as sub-basal carina. Pygidium usually exposed.

Quick identification

Anthribidae are the first of the weevils or curculionoids, but differs from most others in having a free labrum, flexible maxillary palps, and straight antennae combined with a flattened rostrum or occasionally reduced rostrum, transverse and lateral pronotal carinae (last figure) and 4 fused abdominal ventrites. Some species (first figure) lack a rostrum and may be misidentified as non curculionoids. At the lower penultimate figure, the procoxal cavities are seen to be solidly closed behind as all weevils.
