COCCINELLIDAE

Author: John F. Lawrence, 2001.

Classification

Suborder Polyphaga, Series Cucujiformia, Superfamily Cucujoidea.

Description

Antenae with 7-11 segments, clavate, or with 1 to 6 segments club. Antennal insertions exposed or concealed. Visible portion of procoxa transverse with the trochantin concealed. Procoxal cavity externally open and internally closed. Mesocoxae separated by 0.4 to more than 1 coxal width, with mesocoxal cavity laterally open. Tarsal formula rarely 3-3-3 or 4-4-4 but tarsomere 3 reduced and concealed at base of lobe on 2 (pseudotrimerous). Number of ventrites 5 or 6 with 2 connate. Body length 0.9-11 mm. Almost always circular or broadly ovate, rarely oblong, highly convex to moderately flattened, glabrous or pubescent. Antennae short and somewhat clavate but without distinct club. Frontoclypeal suture absent. Apical maxillary palpomere usually expanded and truncate, occasionally narrowed and acute. Curved coxal lines on ventrite 1.

Quick identification

Coccinellidae is a relatively large group including many minute species which are difficult to place. In general, coccinellids have short, clavate antennae (without distinct club), strongly expanded apical maxillary palpomeres, no frontoclypeal suture and curved lines on ventrite 1 (last figure). However, the expanded palpomeres do not occur in one subfamily, which includes many very small species.
